Individual path

The individual path allows MI students to create their own program of study, in collaboration with their academic advisor. Each individual path must be approved by the iSchool Graduate Coordinator.

The flexibility of this option is well-suited for those interested in areas that cut across several of the pre-approved paths.

Requirements for the General Program Option, currently referred as Individual path, remain unchanged.

Students following this option will need to complete INF1001H, INF1002H, INF1003H, in addition to INF1005H and INF1006H

To initiate an individual path, students must:

  1. Meet with their Faculty Advisor and discuss their reasons for wishing to undertake an individual path
  2. Identify a Path Advisor(s) who can provide advice and work out a program of study
  3. Complete an Individual Path Request form  outlining the courses that will serve as required for the student’s individual path
  4. Submit the completed Individual Path Request form by the end of the second term of their first year.

Path Advisors act in an advisory capacity only. The students’ assigned Faculty Advisor will remain the same throughout.

Students who are in a pre-approved path and wish to switch to an individual path during their second year  will need to submit a written request to the Graduate Coordinator, outlining their reasons for wishing to change to an individual path by the end of the first term of their second year.

Please note: Students wishing to fulfill the requirements for two paths, e.g.:  LIS and ARM or CIS and LIS can do so by completing all required courses for both paths. Alternatively, students may wish to complete all required courses for one path, e.g.: LIS, and take courses from another path without completing all the required courses from this second path. Neither one of these options is considered an individual path.
