Patient and Family Information Centre
Unit Location: Patient and Family Information Centre, Queen Lobby
Days: Monday to Friday
Shifts: 9am – 1pm, 1pm- 5pm
Placement Supervisor: Nicole Pinnock
Purpose: To provide assistance to Information centre users and to maintain the centre in good order.
Volunteer Role
The St. Michael’s new Patient and Family Learning Center provides a range of resources and services for inpatients, outpatients, their families and friends in a warm and welcoming environment. The Center’s paper based and online health information supports patients and families in decision making and assists in furthering understanding of their health to positively influence health outcomes and quality of life. Volunteers in the Center will help to provide patient and family-centered care by ensuring patients and families receive accurate and up-to-date information in the form of books, videos, pamphlets, email and/or print-outs from trusted Internet sites. Volunteers in the Center will also support the non-health related informational needs of patients and families around the Hospital.
1. Open/close the Centre to patients and visitors at the designated time
2. Respond to specific requests from patients and visitors
3. Educate users on the use of the Internet and the patient education database
4. Maintain the appearance of the collection
5. Maintain usage statistics
6. Assist in the creation of new materials for marketing the service (slides, brochures, handouts)
7. Ensure that resources are available and working (computers, printers, television)
8. Restock satellite locations (as needed)
Library school students preferred.
No deadline, volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis. Volunteers require 1 full day of training.
