Jubilee Award Winners Announced for 2009
Each year, the Faculty of Information Alumni Association gives a Jubilee Award to a student and to an alumnus/a who have demonstrated an active interest in life at the Faculty and made a real contribution to the iSchool community.
Congratulations to graduating student Meghan Ecclestone and alumnus Dr. Alvin Schrader (MLS ’75), who are the recipients of the 2009 Jubilee Award.
Meghan is an inspiring individual who has illustrated her dedication to the iSchool community through her many contributions as Co-Chair of Professional Development on Student Council this past year. Her work on the Job Fair 2008 and 2009 was exceptional as it gave many students the opportunity to network with potential employers across the country. In addition, she was instrumental in helping to launch the school journal, Faculty of Information Quarterly, last year to increase student exposure to both the professional and academic worlds.
Dr. Schrader retired after 27 years in his illustrious career at the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta as a distinguished faculty member this spring. Not one to rest, he has taken on a new role as Director of Research at the University of Alberta Libraries. While a professor at U of A, he had researched topics such as intellectual freedom and censorship, philosophical foundations of library and information science, and professional education for library and information studies. His contributions, says his nominator and iSchool Senior Fellow, Wendy Newman, are many and impact the field for many years to come. Dr. Schrader has served as the President of CLA, President of the Library Association of Alberta, and Director of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Alberta.
Congratulations to both winners. Meghan will receive the award (with a $500 cash prize) at the June 4th, 2009 Convocation Reception, and Dr. Schrader will receive his award at the Spring Reunion on June 10th, 2009.
