Elysia Guzik Wins Student-to-CAIS Award

Submitted on Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Elysia Guzik’s paper entitled “Information Sharing as Embodied Practice” has been selected for the Student-to-CAIS Award for the highest ranked submission by a student at this year’s CAIS-ACSI (Canadian Association for Information Science/ L’Association canadienne des sciences de l’information) conference at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Award papers will be presented on the first day of the conference (May 31, 2017) between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm.

Elysia’s paper will extend two emerging areas in information scholarship: religious practice and embodiment. Reporting on her completed doctoral research about information practices among Muslim converts in the Toronto area, this paper will discuss how information is shared through non-written documentary sources (e.g. clothing, postures, vocabularies) in the context of religious transitions that take place within a contentious political landscape.

Professor Jenna Hartel, Elysia’s dissertation supervisor at the Faculty of Information remarked: “Elysia–who is now officially Dr. Guzik–recently completed a spectacular dissertation about the information practices of people in greater Toronto who have converted to Islam. Her award-winning paper for the CAIS conference draws upon that study. Given the originality and importance of the topic, I am not surprised that the paper captured the imagination of the jury. This is no doubt the first of many successes for Dr. Guzik.”
